Thanks again for the rundown! Snapshotting like that is definitely cool, I can see why you enjoy it. I’m no stranger to having to nuke the system partition and reinstalling because I broke something so snapshots definitely sound like a convenient tool. Though I might be older and lazier now and less prone to do a bunch of weird things.

I know the memes of “Arch, btw” and have always been scared of it tbh. Maybe it isn’t so bad though? I’ve also heard people praise Bazzite, but I might lot end up doing much gaming on my laptop as I said.

Is the whole thing about real-time or low-latency kernel still a thing, or is that old news? Just in case I wanted to play around with JACK again.

Why do I suddenly get an urge to drop what I’m currently playing and jump into this? Is it actually this good? Holy hell.

Wow, thank you for the extensive reply! I did used to use xfce back in the day, yes. Never had a problem with it, but those were maybe simpler times. Might look into KDE this time, why not.

I was really thinking less of the DE and more along the lines of if you had any recommendations that weren’t Ubuntu- or Debian-based, as that’s pretty much all I’ve used I think. But maybe that’s too much experimenting…

If this is the best thing you can do, then the second best thing is be active. We’re still content starved around here. If you think of something to post, post it. If you can’t post, try to comment. Especially on any post that has no comments. Doesn’t matter how banal your comment is. Nothing scares away potential new users more than seeing post after post with 0 comments in their feed, and nothing disheartens posters more than that “0 comments” under their post.

People are generally scared or reluctant to do things when nobody else is doing them. They don’t want to post in communities that don’t already have recent posts. They don’t want to comment on posts that have 0 comments. So whenever you can break that silence and be that first post or comment, try to do so.

I’m probably not going to be doing much gaming on my laptop, if any. I could be persuaded to experiment if you have any other suggestions.

I used to use UbuntuStudio back when I was playing around with music recording and production ages ago because it ran the real-time kernel which was important for JACK I think. Last time though was just Mint.

My gaming PC is on Win 11 because it’s recent and I’m lazy and it’s convenient. My laptop runs Win 10 so it’ll be Linux I guess. Not really looking forward to finding a distro and reinstalling and whatnot but what can you do. It’s been a good few years since I last had a Linux box so I’m pretty rusty and not up to date on the recent best distros.

You’ll like it I think, I played it earlier this year and absolutely loved it. Great vibe, good story, beautiful pixel art and a great retro feel without the clunk of actual retro games 😄 Cool world building too.

Anyone up to date on the Iceshrimp .NET rewrite? It looks like it’s sort of up and running from the GitHub page, but they don’t run a flagship instance themselves. Is there any instance up and running it at the moment?

Nicotine has deep claws, that’s for sure. I wasn’t even a particularly heavy smoker and I still get a craving sometimes even coming up on ten years since I quit. Hell, I have the occasional dream about smoking still.

Watching the US implode under the combined pressure of greed, corruption, incomprehensible idiocy and incompetence would almost be amusing if its global importance didn’t threaten to pull the rest of us down with it like a boat anchor chain tangled around the ankles of a drowning man.

LW are hesitant to do major changes because if something goes wrong it disrupts the entire Lemmy ecosystem. It’s a direct negative consequence of them growing too big, but once they’re in this position I can understand their reservations. I too wish they’d implement upgrades faster but I have no reason to believe they will just refuse to implement an upgrade forever, that’s unreasonable to assume.

Lemmy.nz is what, about 100 MAU? And I know a Blåhaj admin is Australian but Fedi Observer has the server listed as based in Finland and hosted in Germany. Don’t know if that’s wrong though. Are their users also reporting delays?
