The bodies of 14 children and five women were recovered from the school in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City, and the death toll could still rise because some of the 70 wounded had critical injuries, said Health Ministry spokesman Zaher al-Wahidi. More than 30 other Gaza residents were killed in strikes on homes in a nearby neighborhood of Shijaiyah, he said, citing records at Ahli Hospital.

The Israeli military said it struck a “Hamas command and control center” in the Gaza City area, and said it took steps to lessen harm to civilians. Israel gave the same reason — striking Hamas militants in a “command and control center” — for attacking a United Nations building used as a shelter a day earlier, killing at least 17 people.

It’s literally the first sentence of the second paragraph.

Sure, but look at the title. You don’t call, after blowing up a school, child casualties “people.” That’s what we call trying to soften the blow.

What would you have had them call it?

Israeli strike on a school in Gaza kills at least 14 children, 5 women, and (presumably) 8 men, Palestinian health officials say"?

As it happens, children, women, and men are all ‘people’, and using the collective term makes for a more concise title. It’s not like they’re sugarcoating what actually happened.

That’s correct, it is, but that has nothing to do with the post I was replying to, which claimed

Anything not to paint Israel as child murderers, I guess.

Either way, I’d say that the the lede they did use - ‘Israeli airstrikes killed at least 100 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Thursday[…]’ - is just fine.
