Europe’s most famous technology law, the GDPR, is next on the hit list as the European Union pushes ahead with its regulatory killing spree to slash laws it reckons are weighing down its businesses.

The European Commission plans to present a proposal to cut back the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR for short, in the next couple of weeks. Slashing regulation is a key focus for Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as part of an attempt to make businesses in Europe more competitive with rivals in the United States, China and elsewhere.

There are some parts of it that aren’t great and maybe it could be streamlined, like the cookie warning which should be implemented technically in the browser and part of the cookie protocol. Transition it to making it legally the responsibility of tech giants and advertisers like Microsoft and Google to comply and be honest about what they’re tracking, rather than the sole burden falling on each individual website. Somehow I doubt that’s the only thing they’ll be interested in discussing but I’m going to wait and see what they actually do before I judge.

The funny thing is that the cookie warning only applies to tracking cookies, for stuff like session cookies you do not need it.

But it is always easier to just nag the user too many times than to risk something, so everyone just adds the warning anyway.

Also, IANAL so don’t trust me!

You don’t understand! Yes, we had to turn our citizens into resources for private companies to harvest and sell! But we needed to create shareholder value!

And we’ll create this value by entering into a “who can slash more rights” contest with the USA and China! After giving them a several year head start!!

We’re all* going to need to come together and really knuckle down, if we’re* to catch up with out competitors. It will take sacrifice* and grit.

But together* we* can do it!

*The people affected will be those with a net worth less than €5m
